Turku · since 1983
Creative freedom before classification.
Led by Ismo Laakso, AD is a long-running and fiercely independent strand of experimental music from Turku. Beginning with free jazz and agit rock, the group has moved through the avant-garde, multilingual vocal expression, industrial noise and electronic music.
01 / HISTORY
More than four decades of the same restless freedom.
AD was formed in Turku in the early 1980s. Three recordings were followed by a long break from making records, but the musical idea never disappeared. The group returned in the 2000s with Tocapo and Bodysuit.
AD's music has never settled into a single genre. At its core are composition, rhythm, free expression and the treatment of sound as material — sometimes brutally, sometimes almost imperceptibly.
In November 1983, before AD's first LP had appeared, Helsingin Sanomat profiled the group under the headline So rock isn't dead after all. Later writers have reached for free jazz, agit rock, post-punk, industrial noise and avant-garde to describe AD. The labels have changed; the refusal to settle has not.
